Tuesday June 16
Awoke to much rain this morning and changed the plan for the day, opting for an excursion to the Alte Pinakothek and Neue pinakothek -- the old and new art museums. Walking down the sidewalk to the museums, Donald referred to us as the Soggy Schinken, which we thought was hilarious, until we discovered that schinken are hams, not chickens, and we didn’t really want to call ourselves pigs, except of course considering the breakfast we ate, I suppose we really were schinken after all. Both museums were perfection – a vast array of art with lots of Flemish work, including several Brueghels. Our favorite was a piece by Max Lieberman called Munich Biergarten which was completely captivating. We’ve attached a picture which is probably a pathetic attempt to save the experience in this record. Oh well. Everyone we’ve met has been charming and helpful – and all have spoken excellent English. The hotel is wonderful. Beautifully maintained, comfortable and quite European in flavor. Have already sat in the lobby of the hotel and watched two World Cup matches. Weather excepting, an auspicious beginning. Oh! And Donald has just reminded me of the inauspicious beginning. One of our lovely felines peed in one of our carryons and although I tried mightily to clean up, the smell lingered on and when we were put through a special inspection at Heathrow, the oh-so-lovely aroma was wafting out of our bag into the patient face of the inspector. I’m sure we were the topic of conversation for the rest of the day at Heathrow. Once again, we’ve made our mark (no pun intended) in an airport (recalling the stinky cheese of many years ago).
